Book Excerpt

A sharp knock sounded on the door, and Cat wondered who had come to complain to Simon about the part they’d been given. She’d been doing exactly that for six, long years.

Before Simon could respond, Dmitri Fedorov stepped into the room with a commanding presence and walked right past Cat as if she wasn’t even there. Normally, she’d be worried if the artistic director entered a room and didn’t acknowledge her. But this time, she wasn’t so concerned. It gave her the perfect opportunity to gawk at his tight ass in his worn jeans.

“How did everything go?” he asked in a deep, gravelly voice, forgoing a formal greeting and any pleasantries.

“Well enough.” Simon sat up straighter in his chair. A ballet god like Dmitri Fedorov wasn’t someone to be casual with, even if you were an assistant artistic director with a decent career of your own, like Simon. “They are pleased to have you on board, and they are anxious to start their season.”

Dmitri rested his cane against his leg and rubbed his palms together. “Hopefully they’re as eager to start as I am.”

“I’m sure they are.” Simon motioned to where Cat stood behind him. “In fact, Catherine came by to tell me how excited she is to tackle the role of Clara.”

At the mention of her name, Cat pried her eyes away from her new boss’s derriere just in time for him to turn around and face her. While she was careful to hide her appraisal of his body, Dmitri was not as shy. His gaze raked over her, examining her from the blunt tips of her pointe shoes to her brown hair wound into a neat bun. Self-consciously, she tugged at her powder blue wrap sweater.

She swallowed hard, feeling faint under his intense perusal.

“This Nutcracker is a very important show for me. It’s the start of my new career and my chance to prove myself.” He took a few steps toward her, stopping only a few inches from where she stood. “I’m counting on you.”

With that, he turned and left the room. Cat pulled her eyebrows together as she stared into his wake. Had Dmitri been sizing her up as a dancer or appreciating the way she looked in a leotard and tights? Was he trying to intimidate her with his “I’m counting on you” remark, or was he expressing the faith he had in her abilities?

Author: Lisa Hahn

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cat Brown spends the first six years of her career as one of the lowest-ranking members of the Bretton Falls Ballet. Despite the dancer’s undisputable talent, artistic director Lillian Smith insists Cat is too short for a leading role. When Lillian is forced to retire, world-renowned ballet dancer Dmitri Fedorov takes over and casts Cat as the premier performer in his first production with the company. Cat struggles to fend off a host of distractions as she prepares for the most important role of her career: the most insurmountable of which is her instant attraction to the new boss.

Dmitri, once known for his theatrical performances and womanizing proclivities, disappears into seclusion after a horrific car accident shatters his knee and renders him unable to dance. Looking to escape the constant reminders of how far he’s fallen, Dmitri escapes to Bretton Falls in hopes of elevating the small ballet company there to international prestige. The task proves to be more challenging than Dmitri had bargained for when his surprising interest in Cat Brown becomes fodder for gossip among the company.

Cat and Dmitri both have a lot riding on their upcoming production of The Nutcracker, knowing that their careers depend upon the outcome. However, the biggest challenge they face will be staying away from one another.

Guest Post: Death by Editing

So you finished your manuscript and the feeling of relief comes rushing down your body to your fingertips as you type “The End”. The first word that comes to mind and springboards off your lips is “done”. Unfortunately, that’s far from the truth. In fact, once you’re done writing, the real fun begins. Editing can be the most useful and self-humiliating process all at the same time. Useful because not only are you polishing your work for a better finished product, but you can also trim the fat, improve your story, and also get outside opinions if you’re ready for that. Self-humiliating because you realize maybe you should have paid attention to the grammar section in your English class. Or you’re not that good of a speller as you thought you were. Or worst of all, you stop believing in your story all together and scrap it. For better or for worse, editing is essential to any writing process if you want to be taken seriously as a writer. Here are some things I do to make the process a little easier.

Just walk away. Whether it’s a script, novel, or short story, finishing a project is an accomplishment in itself no matter how rough it is. The best thing you can do for you and the project is just to walk away from it. Give your eyes and brain a rest by closing the laptop. I personally like to take a week of no writing so I can recharge and transition back into the regular world, but you can take as long as you need. When you come back to it, you’re more likely to catch typos and holes in your story.

Read. Reread. And you guessed it… read again. This is where the pain comes in. If you want to be considered the best, you can’t take any shortcuts. So just dive right in and read it until your eyes bleed. Ok, don’t do that because if your eyes are bleeding you should definitely go to the hospital, but you do want to know your story front to back then back to front. It might seem tedious at times, or the whole time, but it is definitely necessary. I make it a point to read whatever I’m writing at least 10 times front to back. In some cases, even that’s not enough, but it’s a start.

Become Leonardo DiCaprio. How can you become an Academy Award winning actor who cares about the environment and can date any woman on the planet you might be asking? It’s a lot easier when it comes to editing your work. Now you won’t have agents beating down your door, but you will have a good grasp on what the voices sound like in your manuscript. I read out loud/acted out every part of my book, The Color of Love, like I was auditioning to be in the Titanic and it really works. It keeps the dialogue fresh and more realistic. Sometimes I do this even if when I’m out in public. Some people give me a strange look because it seems like I’m talking to myself but I don’t care. It’s making my craft better and it can make yours better too. Act out your work and I promise you’ll have fun doing it. Especially if you have a friend doing it with you.

Get some feedback. Preferably professional. This might be the most important thing that you as a writer can do. The fact of the matter is, NO ONE does it alone. Even the most famous writers have people proof reading their work. Whether it’s line editing or copy editing, a different set of eyes with a different view on the world is always good whether they give positive or constructive feedback. With my book, The Color of Love, I did all my edits then passed it off to my wife. Believe it or not she still found errors throughout and some things she didn’t like about the story. After I went through her notes and made the appropriate corrections, I read it front to back again (I know right) and once I felt it was ready I sent it to a professional to be proofread. Surprisingly when it came back there were just minor things that needed to be fixed. So I made the corrections and ever so anxious hit that publish button. It’s better to get this out the way behind the scenes than by your readers.

So that was fun right? Ok, maybe it wasn’t as fun as writing the story but it is very necessary to do. When you finish your manuscript make sure you give yourself a break; you deserve it. Read it over and over and over again. You can’t read enough. Have fun acting out your best scenes and get a friend involved. And finally, the most important step, get some outside feedback. I can’t stress enough how important this is. So strap up you boots and prepare for war because it comes in the form of editing. But when you finish the whole process you will never be more proud of yourself. Happy writing!

Book Excerpt

The devil doesnt wear Prada, he wears Sean John and I was the idiot who taught him how to shop.

That was what I got for reading Frankenstein in college. Id been turned into a mad scientist without even realizing it. Just my luck, I was a math major and the one literature course I took had tricked me into creating a monster.

When I first met Scrooʝe, he—like most humans with XY chromosomes—was a fashion emergency. Awkwardly walking around campus—lost, desperately in need of a haircut, and for some strange reason wearing glasses so big he looked like an owl hunting for prey.

 He was just plain pitiful.

Though I have to confess, from the moment I saw him my heart sang a happy song and I couldnt look away. Something between us was magnetic.

What can I say? I was always the kind of girl who liked rescue projects. When I was eight years old, I turned my familys garage into a makeshift animal shelter and damn near gave my father a heart attack when a hungry pack of strays rushed at him as he pulled into the driveway.

So naturally, one look into Scrooʝes sad, puppy dog eyes and I felt right away—he was the one.

Before I knew it, we were college sweethearts and the best of friends. Of course, I had to clean him up; but after a few months under my tutelage, everyone noticed his transformation. They saw that with his gorgeous toffee skin, deliciously full lips, and sexy broad shoulders, he was the cutest boy on campus. Pretty soon I had girls telling me I needed to start a makeover service.

That was how it all started. Who could’ve known a simple makeover would unleash the devilish genius of the sweetest, shyest, most socially awkward boy I’d ever met? Or that he’d be transformed into music’s biggest superstar with an ego the size of Texas yet more fragile than an egg yolk? Certainly not me.

Author: David Lamb

Genre: Contemporary, African-American Romance

2016 BEST FICTION-Pacific Book Awards. FROM THE FUNNY AND NATURALLY BRILLIANT DAVID LAMB, award-winning playwright of the New York Times celebrated play, Platanos Y Collard Greens, comes a modern spin on Dickens’ classic tale that perfectly combines humor and romance in a story re-imagined for our digital, consumerist age.  This version of Scrooge and Belle is familiar, yet unlike any you’ve come across before. Scrooge, or rather Scrooje, is music’s biggest superstar, with one hundred million albums sold, fifteen million devoted YouTube subscribers, two and a half million Facebook likes, and twenty-five million fanatical Twitter followers known as Scroojites. Belle, is a legal shark who gulps down her opposition voraciously and whose beauty and stunning figure causes traffic accidents as she zips through the sidewalks of Manhattan stylishly adorned and taking no prisoners.   They never imagined being music’s most powerful couple, but that’s exactly what happened when Belle fell head over heels and gave the Coke-bottle glasses wearing, plaid and stripe attired, scrawny, biggest nerd on her college campus the ultimate makeover, turning him into a fashion impresario whose style sets trends from Milan to NY Fashion Week and who can be seen courtside at the NBA Finals sporting a perfectly-fitted cashmere suit.   Then it happens. Belle realizes too late that she’s created a chart-topping monster as Scrooje’s ego explodes and he starts acting a fool.   Now, it’s been three years since they ve spoken. But tonight at Hollywood s biggest red carpet event, with the whole world watching, they’ll be given a second chance.

David Lamb is a native New Yorker, born and raised, bitten with the writing bug since he was in elementary school and had handwriting nobody could decipher. Like Charles Dickens, David grew up a poor boy in the big city who found that the pen really is mightier than the sword.  After finishing college David went on to law school at NYU, but all the time writing was still his heart. While working as a lawyer by day, at night he transformed into a writer and eventually wrote and produced the award-winning hit off-Broadway romantic comedy Platanos Y Collard Greens. Being a writer and having the chance make people laugh out loud while challenging them to think about the world around them, and inspire each of us to believe in the power of love and our own ability to overcome life’s challenges is a great gift that David truly enjoys and thanks you for allowing him to share with you in On Top Of The World (Until The Bell Chimes)

Pointe shoes, tutus, and a snowy road trip with the man she hates. What could possibly go wrong?

The plan was simple. Get to Portland, dance The Nutcracker, and don’t murder your dance partner. And most definitely, do not, under any circumstances, fall in love with him.

A snowy road trip strands Elle Grant in a tiny cabin better suited for serial killings than rehearsals for two professional ballet dancers. With no one but the incredibly talented, excruciatingly handsome, and notoriously terrible Zachary Benson and a few taxidermy woodland creatures for company, Elle’s Christmas plans are officially ruined. Guest Post Fate’s Betrayal

fatesbetrayalbanner

I’m hosting a guest post today by Beth Stifflemire, author of contemporary romance “Fate’s Betrayal”. Please welcome her, and I’ll leave the word to her now.

Editing Tips/Process:

Editing is and I’m quoting my husband, “the least favorite part of the process” when i am writing books. Why is this? I go into…the zone.
Writing is the creative part…the time when energy flows, words hit the paper and stories come to life. Editing on the other hand is when you try like hell to make sure there are zero mistakes and that what the creative juices brought to fruition makes sense.
Editing is something all authors should spend ample amounts of time on and I utilize the below process. I hope this helps others:
1.) Never, ever expect your first draft to be the final draft. Far from it. Many times I will have five plus drafts before I’m even ready for an editor. Read then re-read your manuscript.
2.) After you’ve got the manuscript where you think it “should be” its time to find an editor. There are a few things I’ll point out during this time/process:
  • Find an editor you trust and that you feel you can relate to. They’re examining your “baby” and you need to trust them with it but at the same time, the truth hurts and you need to be prepared to seriously consider and change your work based on their advice/edits.
  • Be prepared to spend some money on editing. Its crucial you invest in your work and this is definitely an area you shouldn’t be afraid to drop some dollars.
  • Get at least 2 passes of your content by the editor. Each pass will uncover and fix something new.
  • Consider Content editing if you are not utilizing the service as of yet. Content editing can really help you make sure your story flows and nothing is missed before it goes to BETA readers.
3.) BETA readers. Find as many trustworthy BETA readers (aka test readers) of your content as possible. They are my “last defense” before prepping for print. Every reader sees something different in your work and will catch things that get by you, your editor and other BETA readers. Offer to give these readers a free signed copy of your book when ready, a gift card or small fee. I myself love to BETA read for fellow authors and at the same time you learn from others and how they write.
So, I hope my particular process assists others in what to expect during the editing proce. Editing should always be the highest priority when prepping a piece of work for the masses. Editors are the equivalent of the make-up artist/stylist/hairdresser behind the star…editors make your work shine.
