The Production Process of My Children’s Book.
Book Two: Amelia, the Venutons and the Golden Cage, by Evonne Blanchard
It all began when my eldest daughter started to yawn over a map of the solar system. How can I make
space and the planets interesting, exciting even? An image popped in my head of a strange purple alien
from Pluto. His name was Uglesnoo. On earth as part of a quest, he became a present for an eight year
old girl called Amelia. From then on, ideas flowed and the concept expanded to a whole series of ten
books; Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures.
I plotted out the general themes of the series first of all. Then I planned out each of the books. Every
story needed its own adventure and it had to link to the next book, until the final adventure on Uglesnoo’s
home dwarf planet of Pluto! We don’t’ mention the dwarf planet status of Pluto in the books. Uglesnoo is
very sensitive to the downgrade!
Next, the writing which is a lot for ten books. After that heaps of editing and then…more editing.
Following that I had the assistance of two fantastic editors who helped me get it to the final stage. As I
neared the end of editing process, I began to work with the illustrator to develop the pictures. On my end
I wrote illustration notes, selecting exciting points of the book and detailing exactly how each illustration
should look. I like to leave some artistic license to the illustrator. With the Venutons I described them in
general, but the illustrator added the stripes, the quirky antenna and the funny shaped nose. I loved the
end creation! The illustrations are in black and white initially. Corrections are made. Then the process is
repeated in color. Final corrections are made. Then it’s on to the layout of the book with help from my
editor. There’s still more editing to do. The pdf. document of, ‘Amelia, the Venutons and the Golden
Cage,’ flies back and forth. Finally, it’s ready. I receive a physical proof. Everything looks good. A final
okay and it’s ready to be published. Phew! It’s a lot of work, but it’s a wonderful feeling holding your
book in your hand!
Two of the books in, ‘Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures,’ are now published,
Book One: Amelia, the Moochins and the Sapphire Palace
When is a present not a present? When it’s a friendly purple alien called Uglesnoo, from the planet Pluto!
Uglesnoo needs to leave right away for the Moon. Uglesnoo also desperately needs Amelia’s help.
Should Amelia venture into outer Space?
Book Two: Amelia, the Venutons and the Golden Cage
Uglesnoo needs Amelia’s help. His sister is very sick. The only cure is a repelling crystal from Neptune.
With his Earthling friend, Amelia, they must continue their quest. More items are needed to buy the
crystal. But Venus is full of danger and angry aliens. Are Uglesnoo and Amelia in over their heads?
I’m currently working on the third book in the series, ‘Amelia, the Merballs and the Merabel
Catapult.’ Amelia’s and Uglesnoo’s quest continues on Mercury. The Merballs-the aliens that live
on Mercury-are friendly…until an asteroid hits their planet. Amelia and Uglesnoo find themselves
accused of treachery? How will they manage to collect the flying shoes they need, leave Mercury
and continue their quest on time? You can find out in the next adventure! For more details about
