Author Interview with Leonard D. Hilley II

Today I’m hosting an interview with Leonard D. Hilley II, author of fantasy novel “Shawndirea”. Enjoy.

Interview with Leonard D. Hilley II, author of Shawndirea.

1) How long have you been writing?

I’ve been creating stories since I was a child. I drew my own comics when I was 9-10 years old and wrote my first novel at age 11. I’ve seriously pursued writing for the past 21 years after various detours in my early writing career.

2) Is Shawndirea your first book? If not, please tell us a little about your first book.

Shawndirea is actually my sixth published novel. My first book is Predators of Darkness: Aftermath. This novel is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Three years after a nuclear attack, a group of scientists and students emerge from a fallout shelter to discover bloodthirsty shape-shifters roaming the streets. There are four books in this series with a genetically altered cat, Morton, who can speak. He’s one of the most beloved characters in my books.

3) Why did you choose fantasy as genre for your book?

The characters are the reason the book had to be fantasy: Dwarves, elves, fairies, demons, and other odd creatures. Some of the main characters were in a novel I started over twenty years ago. I trashed the novel because I didn’t believe it would go anywhere, but the characters still lived inside my mind. Over twenty years they developed, albeit silently, and when I started writing Shawndirea (I had planned a novella), the characters took over and an epic novel was birthed. Two more novels follow Shawndirea in this series, but with the maps and storylines, there is room for at least a half dozen novels.

4) Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Never give up. It is important to note that the best writing comes from rewriting and a vast number of revisions. A first draft is never ready to release to the world. Your reputation is on the line. Read a lot of books. Read books in your chosen genre and those not in your genre. Study how other authors pace their books, the proper dialogue formats, and research information that you don’t understand. The more you study and read, the greater your vocabulary becomes. Write every day.

5) Do you have any works in progress you’d like to tell us about?

I’m currently finishing up a sci-fi thriller about an alien virus that a doctor brings back to Earth in an act of revenge. The virus had killed all the inhabitants on the Deimos Life Station, and in his blindness for revenge, he fails to see that he has risked the lives of every human on Earth because there’s no known cure for the virus.

About Shawndirea

Shawndirea PB2Title: Shawndirea

Author: Leonard D. Hilley II

Genre: Fantasy

Often the smallest unexpected surprises garner the most demanding dilemmas, which proves to be the ordeal that entomologist Ben Whytten faces. While netting butterflies to add to his vast collection, he mistakenly sweeps what he thinks is the most spectacular butterfly he has ever seen into his net. Upon examining his catch, Ben is horrified to discover he has captured a faery and shredded her delicate wings into useless ribbons.

Devastated, Ben vows to take Shawndirea back to her realm, Aetheaon; but he discovers that doing so places their lives into immediate danger. To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den.

Once they cross the rift, Ben enters a world where mysteries, magic, betrayal, and power struggles await. He must adapt quickly or die because Aetheaon is filled with enchanted creatures and numerous races where chaos often dominates order. And since Shawndirea’s destined for the throne of Elvendale, opposing dark forces plot to prevent her from ever reaching her kingdom again. The faery’s magic isn’t enough to fully protect them, so he must trust other adventurers to aid them during their journey.
