Author Interview with J.E. and M. Keep

I’m hosting an interview today with an author duo, J.E. and M. Keep. They write erotic romance novels. They’re currently touring with their scifi post-apocalyptic novel “When Dreamers Wake”.

Author Interview

How long have you been writing?

Both of us have been writing since we were kids. Michelle was always put into creative writing courses and entered into contests, and we’ve both written for one another for years.

Joshua’s mother started to teach him how to read when he was two, and it’s been a lifelong obsession since then. It quickly bubbled over into writing silly stories, then poetry, then stories of life for Michelle, followed by some fanfiction and then finally our joint ventures together!

Is When Dreamers Wake your first novel? If not, please tell us a little about your first book.

We have many, many books out ranging from shorts to full novels. One of the first full novels we published was Vile Wasteland, another post-apocalyptic scifi. Vile Wasteland, though, has a female main character whereas When Dreamers Wake has a male.

Vile Wasteland takes place in a similar setting, though, in which the world as we know it has been destroyed. Alex, the main character, has been sheltered from the world in a bunker but is forced to leave and gather food as her friends face starvation.

When she leaves, however, she realizes just how naïve she was about the world at large, and she struggles to get what she needs after having a near-death experience at the hands of a terrifying group of ‘men’ called The Viles.

Tell us about When Dreamers Wake.

When Dreamers Wake is a post-apocalyptic scifi centering around the character of Leon. It’s very much character driven and we follow him through many relationships. He has so much love to give and wishes to protect so many of the people he knows.

There are some issues of trust with the man. He’s an excellent survivor, well suited to the wastelands of humanity, yet part of that is a hardness that makes him have issues trusting others. He has his own curious ways of trying to overcome that and find companionship despite the risks.

Why did you choose science fiction as a genre for your novel?

We love fantasy and scifi, especially if there are some horror aspects. That’s the type of media and storylines we’re drawn to. We’ve found we’re just not great at straight contemporary novels. Our passions simply don’t lay there.

It’s the fantastical, the real world turned on its head, that sucks us in.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

We actually do a podcast every month where we talk a lot about writing, our inspirations and what has helped us as authors, but I guess the main thing is practice. Don’t let yourself say you have no ideas, or have writers block. Those things are just excuses to not practice your craft.

Perfectionism is another bane a lot of writers face, and you should not be trying to write a perfect work. Just write a story. When you’re done if you feel it wasn’t up to snuff, write another. It’s like any other skill that way, you need to practice to get better. Nobody paints a masterpiece on their first try, and nobody draws a stunning picture by constantly agonizing over and revising their initial drawing. Write more, and keep writing. Write your way past your insecurities.

Do you have any works in progress you’d like to tell us about?

We have so, so many! We have a sequel in editing for When Dreamers Wakes that’s a bit more action oriented. We’re really excited to get that out but wanted to see how fans responded to the first one and see if there’s any touch ups we should do.

Still in the initial writing stages is a story about a young Victorian era woman who follows some mysterious voice into the caverns beneath her family’s estate. It’s a terrifying trip into an unbelievable world beyond the woman’s understanding, and there is no apparent way back out.

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic SciFi

The Old Gods have risen and moved on, leaving Earth in ruins.

Leon liked that just fine.

He got along better after the collapse of society, and has his own vision for how things should be run: with him in charge of his own fate, with many lovers beneath him.

Yet when he has a run-in with a beautiful and mysterious woman, his life will never be the same.

Author Bio

J.E. & M. Keep love to combine fantasy, scifi, horror, romance and mystery into exciting and titillating novels.

They are long term, loving partners in a very happy relationship and because of this, they love to torture their characters. Dark romance touches all of their stories in one way or another, from elicit trysts to forbidden love.

Some of their work contains dubious consent and erotic pain, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Their stories are often called twisted and arousing — at the same time.

All work is 18+, trigger warnings available on the second page of every book. If you want to hear about new releases, sign up for the newsletter!
