I’m hosting a guest post written by Sunayna Prasad, the author of MG fantasy novel “From Frights to Flaws” today. Thank you for writing the guest post, Sunayna!
How to Describe Your Characters
Everyone has a personal preference to character descriptions. Some people like them while others want to picture the characters their own way. I’ve been a control freak for pretty much my whole life. You can describe your characters however you’d like, but here is how you shouldn’t do it:
Describe everything about them (height, weight, nose shape, etc.)
Describe more than one or two traits all at once
Although I like character descriptions, because they make me keep track of the characters and remember them better, I find that overdoing can make me have trouble keeping track of them. It’s okay if you want to be a bit controlling, but let the reader picture some things, too.
Another good way to describe characters and make it enjoyable is to say what each description does and maybe compare it to something similar. I noticed that in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy. It may be a bit hard, but the more you practice, the better you’ll get.
